Staying within the 1.5ºC limit of global warming is a key survival target for many communities particularly in the Global South and for many vulnerable ecosystems. To achieve this, we need a just and equitable phaseout of fossil fuels and a transition to 100% Renewable Energy systems.

We work with CSOs, experts, academics, Renewable Energy Industry Associations, communities and where possible, with governments from across the world to raise ambition and create synergies on various issues including: a global renewable energy capacity and energy efficiency target; the role of large scale electrification; just and equitable use of renewable hydrogen and critical minerals; and ensuring meaningful energy access for all people, among other issues. This must be achieved through a just energy transition framework which centres energy access, public ownership, communities, and sustainability at its core. This aims to not only keep us within the 1.5ºC survival target, but also address energy poverty and reduce air pollution levels.

We promote the deployment of small scale, off-grid, distributed and larger scale renewables supply with its underlying infrastructure like electricity storage, renewable hydrogen, better grid connectivity, capacity building, awareness raising etc. We also work to build CSO capacity on the role of renewable energy in the absence of specific international legal obligations for its use in combating climate change. We focus primarily on solar, wind and geothermal energy as the most impactful and environmentally friendly energy sources.

Who Are We?

We are a community of renewable energy CSO policy leaders, campaigners, academics, industry representatives and other, experts, and guided by our advisory team. Our work is supported and coordinated by a technical team led by Dr Stephan Singer, CAN International’s Senior Global Advisor on climate science and energy, and our Senior Officer, Janet Milongo. Our research is led by our Renewable Energy specialist, Koaile Monaheng and our renewable energy data specialist Julie Ducasse. Our communications are curated by Dara Snead.

Our Values

Energy Sustainability – Utilisation of energy sources in the most clean, non-polluting, highly efficient, sustainable way from cradle to grave.

Energy Equality – Equal opportunities of use of clean energy services, energy technologies and energy consumption to satisfy personal needs, increase livelihoods of the poor and holding capacities.

Accessibility of Clean Renewable Energy – Access to clean and sustainable renewable energy services and products for all.

Affordability of Clean Renewable Energy – Access to affordable and reliable clean renewable energy by all.

We aim to provide knowledge to all of our participants and push for a more ambitious transition to renewables in line with CAN’s demands.

Renewable Energy Tracker

The 2024 Renewable Energy Tracker monitors over 85% of the global population in 60 countries on how and if they are transitioning to fully renewable energy systems.

The latest Renewable Energy Tracker report reveals that not one country is doing enough to provide clean, accessible, and affordable energy. The latest findings show that the world is therefore not on track to reach 100% Renewable Energy by 2050.

Renewable energy remains concentrated in just a few, often rich, countries, inaccessible to people globally – notably the rural poor, who are often dependent on toxic cooking fuels. Despite the continuing growth in investment in renewable energy, there are still too many barriers for developing countries to access the right kind of finance to grow their own renewables, these include mounting debt, limited public grants-based finance available, and high cost of capital in their regions.

Meanwhile, in the name of ‘clean energy’, big corporations are supplying the world with the hardware needed for the energy transition. At the same time, they are extracting the critical minerals needed without the consent of Indigenous Peoples and impacted communities, and at a high cost to the environment.
