Africa Energy Renaissance Conference (AERC)

Africa Energy Renaissance Conference

We co-hosted the AERC with Power Shift Africa, Africa Movement Building Space, and CAN Africa from 30th of August – 1st of September, 2023

Nearly 70 participants will come together in Nairobi, Kenya (ahead of the UNFCCC Africa Climate Week and the Africa Climate Summit) with groups from across the Africa Movements of Movements, convening key African actors to renew and sustain the African energy vision.

Working to establish a new model of energy provision  for the continent, which will address issues of energy access, sustainable development, and crucially how this will be financed.

We need to take advantage of Africa’s massive renewable energy potential, and link to agriculture, other productive sectors, and social services.

Climate change is already being experienced in Africa more severely and earlier than any other continent. Yet international discussions on climate change revolve around predictions on future consequences and the perceived threat of increasing extreme weather events and its effects.

Unless action is taken to help build resilience to the rising effects, enable access to modern energy services, and stop the current trajectory to tie Africa to fossil fuel-based economies, there will be multiple and more severe extreme weather events across the continent.

Africa Climate Action Hub Event:

We hosted a side event at the Action Hub during the Africa Climate Week, Renewable Energy Tracker: Best practices for a clean energy future (Date and time tbc.)

This event was a short film, screening examples from different countries and their driving factors in raising clean energy and ambition. These have been identified by the Renewable Energy Tracker which launched in November 2023. The film was followed by an interactive discussion with the audience, providing a space for showcasing and sharing best practices amongst countries.

DISCUSSION PAPER

Africa’s priority for a global renewable energy target must be rapid, people centred, and address existing gaps in renewable energy investment, especially for the most vulnerable regions.

There must be financial investment to support the expansion of renewables across the continent which addresses issues around energy poverty without further adding to countries’ debt.

The Africa Energy Renaissance Conference sought to address these issues building momentum towards Africa Climate Summit and COP28.
