CAN Intervention: SBI – National Adaptation Plans, June 2021

Thank you co-chair for this opportunity to intervene.

We welcome the report of the least developed countries expert group. We highlight their findings from case studies that with many different actors interested in participating in and contributing to a country’s NAP, the Open NAP approach represents a flexible way of taking on a wide range of inputs. This can build local capacity to make decisions and contribute positively to the knowledge and evidence base for NAPs. We support the expansion and continuation of the Open NAP approach.

We believe that extending this participation and striving for local leadership of adaptation action can contribute to the 2025 assessment and resolving issues of defining needs and measuring progress in adaptation in preparation for the Global Stocktake.

We reflect the comments of Parties concerning the constraints on NAP planning and implementation caused by the Covid pandemic. We call for increased flexibility on the part of supporting and funding bodies so that countries can address these constraints and not be further delayed in the NAP process.

To achieve ambitious goals on adaptation globally, we refer to Parties’ call for the best possible coordination between constituted bodies and would add that such collaboration should be extended to interested and committed civil society organisations.

I thank you for your time.
