Hey Guilbeault! It’s Your Old Friend, ECO (ECO 2, COP26)

Hey Steven, what’s up? Do you remember the long nights? The wordplay? ECO remembers you – drafting articles to fill our pages, calling out climate inaction, doing what you knew best: speaking truth to power. Oh man, we had fun!

ECO is excited to see our old friend Steven Guilbeault is the newly appointed Environment and Climate Change Minister of so-called Canada. He is no stranger to the admittedly cold, austere, grey halls of COP.  ECO’s friend and a founder of Climate Action Network, chair of the board, and former editor of this very newsletter, for over 25 years Steven was collaborating in meeting rooms, demonstrating in action zones, and speaking up in interventions alongside other civil society comrades. This year, with the return of COP comes the return of a veteran of these negotiations  – this time, in a different position of power – one which brings with it many privileges, and many responsibilities.

Steven will no doubt recognize COP, but will COP and ECO recognise Steven? Will Guilbeault continue to be the champion of climate action and of civil society that ECO has known for so long? Will the man who once awarded Canada Fossil of the Day (more than once!) and published an ECO that referred to the nation as the “bad kid at the back of the class” and “the land of fossils” truly hold himself and his newfound colleagues in government to the standard of the systemic, terrific change that he spelled out back in 2012 when that ECO newsletter was published at COP18 in Doha?

Now Steven, with your change of status, ECO is hopeful that the climate hero we know is the climate hero we’ll see in the Cairn Gorm Plenary. I’ll remind you of what ECO cares about most: ambition, justice, reconciliation, equity, people, and planet. I know you know – we wrote these words together so many times, over and over again. Steven, tell me something, Has the time arrived for a new era of Canadian federal action on climate? Oh man, that would be fun!

You should know Steven, that some of us here on the ground still have some questions; after all, we’re talking to a key representative of a major petro-economy! So ECO has to wonder, how will the Minister responsible for getting a country to zero emissions before mid-century show that he takes seriously his role in protecting people from powerful fossil fuel interests? At COP26, ECO will be watching to see if you can help Canada re-chart the journey of an administration shackled to increased funding of fossil fuel subsidies and a vintage pipeline purchase. We hope to see you instead take Canada by the hand and lead the nation down a more responsible path towards the managed decline of the fossil fuel industry.

Steven, you are the brilliant mind once responsible for editing me. I hope you read and understand how happy ECO is to see you back. ECO trusts that you will put people and the planet front and centre.

¡Hey Guilbeault! Es tu viejo amigo, ECO

Hola Steven, ¿qué pasó? ¿Recuerdas las largas noches? ¿Los juegos de palabras? ECO se acuerda de ti: redactando artículos para llenar nuestras páginas, denunciando la inacción climática, haciendo lo que mejor sabías hacer: decir la verdad al poder. Oh, amigo, ¡nos divertimos!

ECO se alegra de que nuestro viejo amigo Steven Guilbeault sea el recién nombrado Ministro de Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático del llamado Canadá. No es ajeno a los ciertamente fríos, austeros y grises salones de la COP.  Amigo de ECO y fundador de la Red de Acción Climática, presidente de la junta directiva y antiguo editor de este mismo boletín, durante más de 25 años Steven estuvo colaborando en las salas de reuniones, manifestándose en las zonas de acción y hablando en las intervenciones junto a otros compañeros de la sociedad civil. Este año, con el regreso de la COP, vuelve un veterano de estas negociaciones, esta vez, en una posición de poder diferente, que conlleva muchos privilegios, y muchas responsabilidades. 

Steven reconocerá sin duda a la COP, pero ¿reconocerán la COP y la ECO a Steven? ¿Seguirá Guilbeault siendo el campeón de la acción climática y de la sociedad civil que ECO ha conocido durante tanto tiempo? ¿El hombre que una vez premió a Canadá como Fósil del Día (más de una vez) y publicó un ECO que se refería a la nación como el “niño malo de la clase” y “el país de los fósiles” se mantendrá realmente a sí mismo y a sus nuevos colegas en el gobierno en el estándar del cambio sistémico y terrible que explicó en 2012 cuando se publicó ese boletín de ECO en la COP18 en Doha? 

Ahora Steven, con su cambio de estatus, ECO tiene la esperanza de que el héroe del clima que conocemos sea el héroe del clima que veremos en el Pleno de Cairn Gorm. Te recordaré lo que más le importa a ECO: la ambición, la justicia, la reconciliación, la equidad, la gente y el planeta. Sé que lo sabes: hemos escrito estas palabras juntos muchas veces, una y otra vez. Steven, dime una cosa, ¿ha llegado el momento de una nueva era de acción federal canadiense sobre el clima? ¡Oh, hombre, eso sería divertido! 

Deberías saber, Steven, que algunos de nosotros aquí en el terreno todavía tenemos algunas preguntas; después de todo, ¡estamos hablando con un representante clave de una importante petroeconomía! Así que ECO tiene que preguntarse, ¿cómo demostrará el ministro responsable de llevar a un país a cero emisiones antes de mediados de siglo que se toma en serio su papel de proteger a la gente de los poderosos intereses de los combustibles fósiles? En la COP26, ECO estará atento para ver si puede ayudar a Canadá a volver a trazar el camino de una administración encadenada a una mayor financiación de los subsidios a los combustibles fósiles y a la compra de un oleoducto de época. Esperamos que, en su lugar, tome a Canadá de la mano y lleve a la nación por un camino más responsable hacia el declive controlado de la industria de los combustibles fósiles. 

Steven, eres la mente brillante que una vez se encargó de editarme. Espero que leas y entiendas lo feliz que está ECO de verte de vuelta. ECO confía en que pondrás a las personas y al planeta en primer plano.
