About El Droubi

El Droubi’s formal education was in biology with a focus on marine ecology, he spent the early years of his career in environmental consultancy with a primary focus on Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Management Plans.

El Droubi then transitioned to the field of conservation, working in the Red Sea with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) where he undertook a variety of projects including the development of reef management plans, environmental monitoring plans the development, implementation, and management of a Solid Waste Management for two cities, as well as managing several campaigns against unsustainable practices in the Red Sea.

El Droubi co-founded and coordinated the “Egyptians Against Coal” movement in 2013 which strived to stop the introduction of coal into the national energy mix, a novel policy spearheaded by the cement lobby at the time. The movement included several NGOs, academics, and youth activists and succeeded in highlighting the adverse impacts of the imminent introduction of coal garnering significant public backing.

El Droubi joined as the Regional Campaigns Manager at Greenpeace MENA in 2020, leading the regional campaigns team’s programmes, including air pollution, open campaigning platform, collective climate action, climate justice, and alternative futures campaign, in addition to the regional rapid response work as well as the policy work in multilateral processes.

El Droubi was a key member of several global teams within Greenpeace as well as an international spokesperson and regional focal point for the FSO Safer Campaign. He previously was a campaigner in the organization focusing on the sustainable agriculture campaign against the introduction of GMOs in the region.

Currently, he is a member of the secretariat of Climate Action Network International, as Global Campaigns Manager.
