Solidarity with the People of Cuba is vital amid illegal US Blockade

Climate Action Network is deeply humbled by the resilience of the Cuban people who have been plunged into a devastating humanitarian emergency by the US.

CAN fully condemns the illegal fuel blockade by the US against Cuban families. Cuba’s power is out, leading to hospitals failing, water being cut, and people starving while schools are closing robbing innocent children of their education. For sixty years, Cuba has been dealing with a US embargo that the vast majority of countries have voted against almost every year in the United Nations General Assembly since 1992.

This blockade is illegal, and using economic policy to make people suffer is immoral. The US is trying to strong-arm Cuba, completely ignoring any sense of sovereignty or fairness. Threatening the rest of the world with sanctions just for trading with Cuba is a total violation of international rules and basic human rights. No country should have the power to starve out another nation.

The US is trying to grab whatever it can however it wants from Latin America and the Caribbean. We’ve seen the US illegally attack Venezuela, extrajudicially kill people in the Caribbean, and threaten Mexico and Colombia. The “American Shield” plan is the Monroe Doctrine in a new guise for US domination. The illegal US blockade is not just about Cuba; it’s about the US crushing any country that doesn’t fall in line with its imperialist agenda, and stopping the region and the Global South from flourishing.

CAN encourages governments in Latin America and the Caribbean to act against this US blockade, stay trading with Cuba, safeguard international law and cooperation, while taking steps to prevent the US from ignoring the UN Charter. If the region does not stick together, the US will keep steamrolling it.

CAN commends the courage and selflessness of those who have broken the illegal US blockade to bring humanitarian aid to the Cuban people. We support demands for more relief to be safely distributed.

CAN sends a message to the Cuban people that you are not alone. Our solidarity moves across the Americas and the world in condemnation of the illegal US blockade. CAN believes in sovereignty, freedom of thought and human rights, rejects imperialism, and demands respect for international law in our continued fight for justice for all peoples suffering aggression, occupation and oppression.

La solidaridad con el pueblo de Cuba es vital ante el bloqueo ilegal de los EE. UU.

La Red de Acción por el Clima (CAN, por sus siglas en inglés) se siente profundamente conmovida por la resiliencia del pueblo cubano, que se ve sumido en una devastadora emergencia humanitaria por parte de los Estados Unidos.

CAN condena el bloqueo ilegal de combustible impuesto por EE. UU. contra las familias cubanas. Cuba se encuentra sin electricidad, lo que ha provocado el colapso de hospitales, el corte del suministro de agua y el hambre de la población. Asimismo, el cierre de escuelas está privando a niños y niñas inocentes de su derecho a la educación. Durante sesenta años, Cuba ha enfrentado un embargo estadounidense que la mayoría de los países ha rechazado en la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, casi cada año desde 1992.

Este bloqueo es ilegal, y utilizar la política económica para hacer sufrir a la gente es inmoral. EE. UU. intenta presionar a Cuba, ignorando por completo cualquier sentido de soberanía o justicia. Amenazar al resto del mundo con sanciones solo por comerciar con Cuba es una violación total de las normas internacionales y de los derechos humanos fundamentales. Ningún país debería tener el poder de someter a otra nación al hambre.

EE. UU. intenta apoderarse de todo lo que puede, de la manera que quiere, en América Latina y el Caribe. Hemos visto cómo atacan ilegalmente a Venezuela, ejecutan personas de forma extrajudicial en el Caribe y amenazan a México y Colombia. El plan “Escudo de las Américas” no es más que la Doctrina Monroe con un nuevo disfraz para la dominación estadounidense. Este bloqueo ilegal no se trata solo de Cuba; se trata de que EE. UU. aplasta a cualquier país que no se alinee con su agenda imperialista, impidiendo que la región y el Sur Global prosperen.

CAN alienta a los gobiernos de América Latina y el Caribe a actuar contra este bloqueo, mantener el comercio con Cuba y defender el derecho internacional y la cooperación, tomando medidas para evitar que EE. UU. siga ignorando la Carta de las Naciones Unidas. Si la región no se mantiene unida, EE. UU. seguirá pasando por encima de ella.

CAN elogia la valentía y el desinterés de quienes han roto el bloqueo ilegal para llevar ayuda humanitaria al pueblo cubano, y apoya los llamados a ampliar el acceso a asistencia de manera segura.

CAN envía un mensaje al pueblo cubano: no están solos. Nuestra solidaridad se extiende por América Latina, el Caribe y el mundo en condena al bloqueo ilegal de los EE. UU. CAN reafirma su compromiso con la soberanía, la libertad de pensamiento y los derechos humanos, rechaza el imperialismo y exige el respeto al derecho internacional en la lucha continua por la justicia para todos los pueblos que sufren agresión, ocupación y opresión.
