Statement on the arrest of Harjeet Singh
8 January 2026
Climate Action Network (CAN) notes with concern the recent arrest of Mr Harjeet Singh. We welcome his subsequent release based on consideration of the merits of the case. We also note the references made about CAN by authorities in relation to allegations of “foreign” funding to promote agendas against the domestic interests of India.
Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of Climate Action Network International, said: “As the Executive Director of one of the largest civil society networks working to address the climate crisis, it is disheartening to have read the characterisation of CAN by Indian authorities, as a “foreign entity” that funded Harjeet Singh’s organisation to promote an agenda against the interests of India.
“For over 35 years, CAN has worked with more than 2,000 organisations across 140 countries to advance climate justice, with a strong focus on the priorities of developing countries like India. Our advocacy has centred on issues India has consistently raised at global climate talks, holding rich nations accountable for their historical responsibility, securing finance for adaptation, establishing the Loss and Damage Fund, and advancing a Just Transition that supports developing economies. At COPs from Baku to Belém, CAN has publicly criticised weak outcomes on climate finance, echoing concerns voiced by India itself. Leadership from the Global South, including Harjeet Singh, has been central to these efforts. CAN’s work is about strengthening the voice of developing countries and vulnerable communities in global climate negotiations, not undermining national interests.”
