Break the Gaza siege: Climate Action Network supports activists’ brave aid efforts
9 June 2025
Peaceful activists will not be cowed by Israeli aggression. Climate Action Network condemns the interception by Israel’s military of the Madleen, a boat with twelve activists on board who were attempting to deliver desperately needed food and medicines to Palestinians in Gaza in the early hours of June 9th 2025. Climate campaigner, Greta Thunberg, one of the activists on board, says the group has been kidnapped.
Climate Action Network calls for the safe and immediate release of all the activists arrested by the Israeli military. CAN stands in solidarity with other initiatives taken by activists and diplomats across the world, through land and sea. We support the convoy of thousands of volunteers, including diplomats, called Al-Soumoud (Steadfastness), which is travelling from Algeria and Tunisia to Gaza in an effort to break the siege. Like with the Madleen, the overland caravan is carrying vital supplies that starving and injured Palestinians urgently need. We also stand in solidarity with those who are participating in the Global March to Gaza from across the world on June 12th to 15th.
The United Nations has warned that the lack of food entering Gaza caused by ongoing Israeli aid restrictions is leaving increasing numbers of Palestinians “vulnerable to starvation”, with daily energy intake now well below what a human needs to survive. Over two million Palestinians are living in a forced famine. This forced starvation takes place during the constant bombardment by Israel, resulting in a number of massacres each day.
The Israeli army has declared that Palestinians should only move to and from the aid distribution sites run by the US and Israeli Global Humanitarian Foundation between 06:00 and 18:00 local time – and that at all other times it should be considered an “active combat zone”. This flies in the face of humanitarian law.
CAN calls on global leaders to use all channels to ensure Israel’s immediate compliance with International Law and international humanitarian law, open the borders for humanitarian aid, restore the ceasefire, and re-engage in genuine negotiations to ensure lasting peace, dignity, and justice for the Palestinian people. CAN demands the immediate release of the Madleen activists, the safe passage of the aid convoy travelling from North Africa, and the protection of all activists participating in the Global March to Gaza.
