Energy Transfer: Sinister attack on Greenpeace, Climate Action Network member

20 March 2025

Climate Action Network, of which Greenpeace is a long-standing member, expresses solidarity with the environmental organisation in response to the deeply troubling outcome of Energy Transfer’s meritless lawsuit.

Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of Climate Action Network International, said: “The lawsuit by Energy Transfer in the US against Greenpeace is a sinister attack by Big Oil on the right to free speech and peaceful protest. It demonstrates the actions of an emboldened fossil fuel industry. The jury’s verdict calling on Greenpeace to pay US$660 million weaponises the law to serve narrow corporate interests. This should worry us all. The fossil fuel industry knows that its existence is a threat to the existence of people and the planet. We are witnessing the last kicks of a dying horse. The climate movement will not be silenced. We will continue the fight for climate justice and in support of the millions of people around the world affected by devastating climate impacts. We are in solidarity with Greenpeace and all civil society organisations affected by the repressive actions of big polluting corporations.”

This lawsuit, one of the largest Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) cases ever filed, are meant to silence or bankrupt opponents – which is why most U.S. states and several countries have put legal protections in place to protect advocates. But in North Dakota, where the case was heard, no anti-SLAPP statutes exist.
