CAN welcomes COP30 leadership announcement, calls for bold and urgent action
22 January 2025
Climate Action Network welcomes the appointment of Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago as President of COP30 and Ana Toni, Brazil’s Climate Change Secretary, as its Executive Director. These appointments bring experienced and respected leaders to the helm of the pivotal climate conference scheduled for November in Belém, Brazil.
Ambassador Corrêa do Lago’s extensive expertise in multilateral climate negotiations and his international diplomatic experience and credibility provide a solid foundation for steering COP30. The challenges are immense, with global warming surpassing the temperature limits in the Paris Agreement and geopolitical tensions increasingly obstructing climate action and international cooperation.
CAN remains committed to supporting the COP30 leadership in achieving a transformative outcome that prioritises the needs of the most vulnerable, secures ambitious commitments, addresses equity in the outcomes, and strengthens global solidarity in the face of the escalating climate crisis.
Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of CAN International, underscored the urgency of the moment: “COP30 comes at a critical juncture for the global climate movement, demonstrating to the world that the multilateral process remains essential to addressing humanity’s greatest collective challenge. Ambassador Corrêa do Lago and Ana Toni bring exceptional expertise and leadership to this process, and we welcome their appointments. Their success will demand courage, innovation, and a relentless focus on justice and equity.
“The stakes at COP30 could not be higher. This conference must deliver bold, urgent, and transformative action. We look forward to engaging closely with the Presidency team to ensure that COP30 addresses the challenges and becomes a landmark moment for climate justice and vulnerable people across the world. We believe this is possible with or without the US administration.”
