G7 Finance Ministers’ Communiqué: CAN media reaction
25 May 2024
In response to the outcome of the G7 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Stresa, Italy today, Climate Action Network’s Global Lead on Multilateral Processes, Rebecca Thissen, said:
“G7 Finance Ministers have maintained their long and deplorable history of shirking responsibility and kicking the can down the road. The world needed a fresh commitment to scaling up public finance for climate action – what we got was empty rhetoric instead. A crystal clear call for a billionaires’ tax is required, but what has been offered is a ‘menu of policy options for a Just Transition towards Net-Zero.’
The G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Communiqué exposes the absence of responsibility of this group of rich, polluting countries as the world grapples with the increased and devastating impacts of climate change. In the face of such a weak outcome, the Climate Action Network adds its voice to the many social movements mobilising to get the G7, which is made up of historical polluters, to pay up for the debt they owe for the mass environmental damage they have caused to the Global South.”
