Goodbye… For Now! / El viaje del GST de Bonn a Sharm el-Sheikh (ECO 10, SB56)

As the SB56 comes to an end, a sigh of relief can be heard throughout the convention centre. Alas! Soon, two weeks of endless negotiations will be over, and delegations will return back to their capitals with the comforting sense of professional accomplishment. Alas! Soon, the ranting of climate activists, youth, and the victims of inaction shall no longer be heard, and governmental officials may go back to the blissful silence of their ministries – troubled only by the languid rustling of their offices’ air conditioning. Alas…!
Unfortunately, the planet cannot afford the euphoric perspective of your uneventful homecoming. Honourable delegates, as you will soon enjoy the ‘well-deserved’ praises of your superiors (or not…?), ECO would like to address – one last time during this SB56 – their most apologetic condolences for the loss of your bureaucratic tranquillity. The end of SB56 does not amount to the end of our engagement and rest assured that you will continue to hear the voices of our outrage well beyond the Bonn UN Campus. The walls of your ministries will never be thick enough to silence the united voice of millions of victims and the many more that are to come in face of your undelivered promises.
Luckily, your misery is not carved in stone – albeit ECO is saddened to inform you of the insufficiency of your SB56 performance. Would you finally act upon the responsibility that falls on your shoulders to ensure the passing of a liveable planet to – to whom indeed? Future generations? Your children? Yourselves in your final years? – only then would we stop our lament. Honourable delegates, if you won’t take action for the sake of the Earth, the security of its inhabitants and the richness of its biodiversity, do it for your own sanity and the sweet vindication of knowing that you would finally shut down our complaints. On that note, we look forward seeing you in Sharm el-Sheikh. Have a safe return home!

Hasta la vista… ¡de momento!
Cuando el SB56 llega a su fin, se oye un suspiro de alivio en todo el centro de convenciones. Por desgracia, pronto se acabarán dos semanas de interminables negociaciones y las delegaciones regresarán a sus capitales con la reconfortante sensación de haber alcanzado un logro profesional. Por desgracia, pronto dejarán de oírse los desplantes de los activistas del clima, de los jóvenes y de las víctimas de la inacción, y los funcionarios gubernamentales podrán volver al dichoso silencio de sus ministerios, preocupados únicamente por el lánguido susurro del aire acondicionado de sus oficinas. ¡Ay!
Por desgracia, el planeta no puede permitirse la perspectiva eufórica de su regreso sin incidentes. Honorables delegados, dado que pronto disfrutarán de los “merecidos” elogios de sus superiores (¿o no…?), ECO quisiera dirigirles -por última vez durante esta SB56- sus más disculpables condolencias por la pérdida de su tranquilidad burocrática. El fin del SB56 no supone el fin de nuestro compromiso y tengan la seguridad de que seguirán escuchando las voces de nuestra indignación mucho más allá del Campus de la ONU de Bonn. Los muros de sus ministerios nunca serán lo suficientemente gruesos como para acallar la voz unida de millones de víctimas y las muchas más que están por venir ante sus promesas incumplidas.
Por suerte, su miseria no está grabada en piedra, aunque a ECO le apena informarle de la insuficiencia de su actuación en el SB56. ¿Actuará por fin sobre la responsabilidad que recae sobre sus hombros para garantizar la transmisión de un planeta habitable a… quién? ¿A las generaciones futuras? ¿A sus hijos? ¿A ustedes mismos en sus últimos años? – Sólo entonces dejaríamos de lamentarnos. Honorables delegados, si no toman medidas por el bien de la Tierra, la seguridad de sus habitantes y la riqueza de su biodiversidad, háganlo por su propia cordura y por la dulce reivindicación de saber que por fin cerrarán nuestras quejas. En este sentido, esperamos verle en Sharm el-Sheikh. Que tenga un buen regreso a casa.
